Default DWC/Bubbleponics Grow Tips and Help

Hello everyone! I wanted to start a place that people can go for help that are currently or thinking about running a DWC/Bubbleponics grow.

    A little about me:
I am currently running single 5 gallon totes I purchased from Walmart. I spray painted them black and then white for better light reflection. I have since changed the look of my buckets by adding reflective aluminum tape to the outside of my buckets to further the reflectiveness of my buckets. I'm using a Sunleaves 35watt 950gph air pump with a 6-way splitter on it. The light setup I'm using is a 400w HPS Cooltube that is connected to a 530 cfm inline fan w/carbon filter. The tent is 2ft x 4ft x 5ft (w x l x h).

This is my 3rd year growing for personal medication and loving it! I did 2 years of research by forum surfing, book reading and watching grow videos before diving into my first grow with bag seed.

If you need any help or have information you would like to share please feel free to use this thread.

(Mods: If this is a double post please remove mine.)

Some helpful tips I picked up during my grows so far:

Make sure to calibrate your meters at least every 2 weeks or so. Don't forget to change your batteries at least every 2 grows.

Remember to change the batteries in your temp/humidity gauge.

If your water is warm in your buckets, you can add some frozen water bottles. (I have 4 20oz bottles in my freezer at all times.)

If you are getting slime (algie) on your roots or bucket, try adding a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (h2o2). Make sure there aren't any light leaks in your lid or bucket. You may also want to check the water temp and try to keep it in the high to mid 60's (degrees fahrenheit).

I rotate my plants 180 degrees everyday during PH'ing of the water.

Hope this help someone since I found most of this surfing and trial and error. I'll add more as I think of them. I have a few extra buckets and will take some pictures of the process I do when making a new grow bucket. I'll include the size drill and hole saw size I use for my buckets as well.

    Happy Growing!!

I'm sorry I have not used one of those so not to sure how it will perform. Just a heads up you could make one of those on the cheap since you will still need to light proof that container before using it. If you would like some advice on how to make it just let me know.

I am getting ready to transfer my plant into a 5 gallon Dwc today. My questions are... Do I remove the plastic from the 4in rockwool cube? I also have a drip system that will be feeding the plant from the top. Do I leave the drip system running 24 hours or should I put it on a timer? I'm sure I'll have more questions as time goes by. But for now any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum! I have not used a drip system with my DWC setup but you can either let it run 24/7 or let it run 24/7 until your roots hit water. It's really up to you.

I know a few people that have used a drip system in DWC. They leave the drip system in for the full grow or they remove the drip system after the thrid week or when the roots hit the water. Just got to keep any eye on your water temps with the pump in your res.

Still working on getting the project ready for taking step-by-step pictures of how I build my buckets. Just will take a bit or if I get rushed I'll get to it faster. I have about 4 or 5 extra buckets so I will need to make at least 2 or 3 for my next grows. Stay tuned for more updates and sorry I have been not posting, been busy with the OG Kush #18.

hey everybody, so im doing my first dwc grow i have plants in dirt right now just starting to flower so i decided to experiment for the next grow this is my setup.
    fresno1 041.JPGfresno1 043.JPG

if anybody sees a problem with this plz let me know..

the pump is good for up to 20 gallon tanks but im not sure if its supplying enough splash from the bubbles bcz its small in a 5 gal and split two ways.

i went out and bought this for the nutrient solution..
    fresno1 044.JPGfresno1 045.JPGfresno1 046.JPG

Any comments on the NPK levels or nutrient solution in general would be great. an i kno a ph tester is rly important but i just dont have the cash right now if the seedling is ready before i can get the tester( worst case scenario ill get testing strips) is the provided ratio amount trustworthy to be at a ok ph?

And last question i have two types of medium i have rockwool cube and im not sure if its too small lemme know? and this other dirt like sponge compound its doesnt wash away and is hard to crumble or tear but is ment to be planted in dirt what do you think could it work in with the clay pebbles and truly last question how deep do i set the sprouting plant into the medium with the clay pebbles ther do i want it touching the bottom of the net pot or the stalk base level with the lid or a row or two of pebbles between the net and rockwool and some on top too? this is why im not sure of the right size of rockwool its just what i had laying around.

Also i was thinking idk mayb im a lil too ambitious for a first time hydro grower about adding a magnetic stirrer at the bottom but i dont know hey the bubbles from the airstone would react to the vortex created whether they would have enough upward force to still bubble and splash the roots

If i may make a suggestion...top drip feed is unnecessary in dwc buckets if your willing to check/hand water every other day. (take a beer cup or whatever cup you have and fill it with the rez water and poor it over the medium your roots are in) you can also fill up the bucket to the bottom of the net pot and let the bubbles splash onto the roots from the bottom upward until the roots reach downward into the solution at which time the drip feed is no longer needed since the roots are in the solution and the air is being supplied by the airsrones. Point being i used to do drip feed until i relized it was unnecessary and making life harder (worrying agout drip rate/over under watering, clogged drippers, broken pump, and extra electricity for the h20 pump as well). It may have a place in some garden for some reason..just not in mine. Other reccomendations are large airstones for 5 gal buckets, med for 3 gal and lower, get some zone and peroxide 29% (its way stronger) in case of root algae and root rot prevenative. I rambled my bad, this is just what ive noticed work for me. Hope that may help save someone some money and some time. Cheers brudda.
