Thread: Feminizing with STS Technique ??

Hello and welcome to my nightmare! I'm really interested in making feminized seeds so I've been doing some research and found 2 ways to do so.

1:Soma Techinque
2:STS Techinque

I have since decided to move on with the STS Techinque since I have heard mixed issues with Soma's Techinque.

My first question is if I already have a feminized seed and would like to be able to do the STS trick to make more Fem seeds or will this create a monster?

My next question is will I be able to spray the STS mixture on just 1 branch so I don't have to waste a perfectly good plant for pollon?

I ordered the ingredients for the STS and should be here in some time this week so I might try this on the OG Kush #18 and possibly the Alien Abduction from OGG.

This will be a new project of mine since space is limited and have had great success with fem seeds. I would like to make my own fem seeds from the stock I have so stay tune for future updates.

Yes u can do it to a single branch and yes depending on the generation it may have a hightened risk of hermi if you Self a Fem progeny, but it'll most likely be totally fine as long as you dont stress it out to much.

Thanks for the reply Vader! Ill be doing my best not to stress the plants to much. I'm definitely not going to be adding anymore nutrients to the lineup on this exercise. I'm really excited to try this on the Alien Abduction since watching your part 1 harvest video. Seeing the purple/green pheno just got my mind racing to see it in fem seed form. I'm hoping I got one like that in the pack I had received. Atleast I will be able test my cloner out when doing this.

Just received all the stuff needed now to make the STS solution and will be testing it on the next grow. It will be on the OG Kush #18 from Reserva Privada. I just need to know when to start spraying to hope to get some pollen from the flowers before harvest. I think I read that it will take about 3 weeks to start to see male parts and then another 3 weeks for pollen to form, does this sound right? Also since I only have 1 seed of this so I'm thinking I will have to clone it before applying the STA solution since I will want it for breeding after collecting pollen. Unless the seeds would become mature in time with 1 life cycle with out the need for cloning? Sorry for all the rambling but I just want to be successful at this and need to make sure I dot all my i's and cross all my t's.

Using STS For Sex Reversal

There has been one key change that I want to pass along to everyone

I have discovered that using a stronger concentration of STS does not make a plant more likely to produce pollen. It just burns/stresses the plant. What DOES make a plant much more likely to complete it's mission and make pollen is a second spraying at the end of week 2.

My conclusion is that STS in any concentration is only effective at inhibiting ethylene for about 3 weeks; at that point the plant's natural female metabolism begins to take back control, and even a plant that is covered with male blooms can't finish the journey to manhood and produce pollen. A second spraying allows inhibition to last through week 6, which is more than enough time to release pollen.

Some of you have decided to use stronger concentrations of STS. This is fine as long as it doesn't burn your plants. Obviously there is a wide range of usable formulas that will work. But the second spraying is the key to follow-through. You can store the working solution you used for round one (in the spray bottle) in your refrigerator for two weeks; no need to mix a new batch from stock.

I don't see the point of going any stronger than the formula I originally came up with. It has proven itself many times over. The only change I might make is to adjust it slightly to Gobgoober's "molar-correct" mix ratio. This is not at all necessary, but does allow the most effective use of the chemicals together.

Here's a re-post of the formula mix instructions, with the adjusted recipe below that:

Preparation of STS:

First, a stock solution is made. It consists of two parts (A and B) that are initially mixed separately, then blended together. Part A is ALWAYS mixed into part B while stirring rapidly. Use distilled water; tap water may cause precipitates to form.

Wear gloves while mixing and using these chemicals, and mix and use in a properly ventilated area. A mask will prevent the breathing of any dust, which is caustic. STS is colorless and odorless, and poses minimal health risks if used as described here. (See material safety data sheet links below). Note that silver nitrate and STS can cause brown stains upon drying, so spray over newspaper and avoid spilling.

Part A: .5 gram silver nitrate stirred into 500ml distilled water
Part B: 2.5 grams sodium thiosulfate (anhydrous) stirred into 500ml distilled water

The silver nitrate dissolves within 15 seconds. The sodium thiosulfate takes 30-45 seconds to dissolve.

The silver nitrate solution (A) is then mixed into the sodium thiosulfate solution (B) while stirring rapidly. The resulting blend is stock silver thiosulfate solution (STS).

This stock solution is then diluted at a ratio of 1:9 to make a working solution. For example, 100ml of stock STS is added to 900ml of distilled water. This is then sprayed on select female plants.

Both the stock STS and the working solution should be refrigerated after use, as well as the powdered chemicals, to avoid activity loss.

The adjusted formula is as follows:

Part A: .7 gram silver nitrate stirred into 40ml distilled water
Part B: 2.6 grams sodium thiosulfate (anhydrous) stirred into 160 ml distilled water

Next, slowly add the silver nitrate solution to the sodium thiosulfate solution while stirring. This combination is then added to 800 ml of distilled water to equal 1 liter. This is your final stock solution. It is diluted 1:9 with more distilled water to make your final working solution, which then gets sprayed on your target plant.

Either formula will work great, so don't sweat it too much. But do that second spraying at the end of week 2... seems to be the key for getting pollen from the more difficult strains.

PREPARATION OF SILVER THIOSULFATE (STS) SOLUTION

Silver Thiosulfate (STS) is commonly used to block the action of ethylene in plant cell cultures.
Ethylene is a hormone that is present in the gaseous state. Ethylene increases during
senescence and ripening, and has been shown to increase in plant cell cultures due to
wounding or the presence of auxins. Silver nitrate may be used alone to block the action of
ethylene but it is not transported as well as STS thus is seldom used alone.

Prepare a 0.1 M Sodium Thiosulfate (STS) stock solution by dissolving 1.58 g of Sodium
Thiosulfate (Product No. S 620) into 100 ml of water. Prepare a 0.1 M Silver Nitrate stock
solution by dissolving 1.7 g of Silver Nitrate (Product No. S 169) into 100 ml of water. Store the
stock solution in the dark until needed to prepare the STS.

The STS solution is prepared with a molar ratio between silver and thiosulfate of 1:4,
respectively. Nearly all of the silver present in the solution is in the form of [Ag (S2O3)2]3-, the
active complex for ethylene effect inhibition.

Prepare a 0.02 M STS by slowly pouring 20 ml of 0.1 M silver nitrate stock solution into 80 ml of
0.1 M sodium thiosulfate stock solution. The STS can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a
month. However, preparation of the STS just prior to use is recommended.

I remember reading the first formula but have not the others. Going to be doing the first formula when I start the next plant. So do I just have to start spraying the selected branch the day of 12/12 or wait until flowering starts? Thanks for the info Goda Green!

once you 12/12 just start spraying every 3-4 days until week 3 and you should be good, should start seeing male sacks within 3 weeks and they should start opening by week 4 ~_~

I have 3 projects about to start one is a Low Ryder#2 Grow and Pollon For a New Stock Of LR seeds And the other is to Hermes one of my Hashell Berry First Gen For fem seeds Then i have my PER SUMMER grow LSD's And White Widows

I'm looking to start this as soon as the Strawberry Blue plant is done. It is a 9 week strain and will be starting week 7 on Wednesday. Since I have the new dry box built it leaves the tent available for new grows. It should be starting around December 14.

Okay, use the second formula which is based on the last formula which is from biology sites who been testing this stuff and have the correct one.

The last formula is for 100ml sts stock, while the second formula is for 200ml. And thus basicly the same.

Last formula using 0.34 nitrate and 1.264 sodium x2 = 0.7 silver and 2.6 sodium rounded up. This results in 0.02 mol the same as the last formula

Because working solution recommanded is 4mM or 0.004 for use, which means it needs to be diluted 5x to achieve this.0.02:5=0.004 200ml x5= 1 liter to get 0.004

PS: Don't make the mistake i made from reading the formula wrong, after adding 800ml to your 200ml sts stock, that is your final solution. I misread and thought i needed to dilute this 1 liter even more like 1:9

The info on the internet is wrong and maybe on purpose and confuses two sts apllications as sts can be used to not stop ethelyne and do other things. When diluting 1:9 they are making 2mM with the last formula. When u want to aim for 4mM.

Do not use the first formula as it is wrong, thats why the second ajusted formula works with 200ml and make it 1 liter, while the first formula makes 1 liter and talks about diluting it more. Making it too weak

Yeah i had No luck with the 1 to 9 Shit so i tryed 50 50 And still Not much luck So i tryed 100% solution I got Nuts But to Late to Fem My GF. So hear what i did 1g SN in 500ml H2o 2.5g ST to 500ml H2o =1 liter Of sts Stock I used it once evey 3 to 4 days i had nuts in 3 1/2 weeks

Still want to do this just don't know when I will be getting to it. I'll keep everyone posted when I get the ball rolling.
